AMY FINLAYSON x GEORGES ANTONI
‘GRAVITY IS ONLY A THEORY SAYS THE BUTTERFLY’
OPENING NIGHT 28 JUNE 2018 6-9PM
(Exhibition continues until 12 JULY 2018)
Gravity is Only a Theory says the Butterfly, presented by the Fin Collection, SUNSTUDIOS and Canon Australia, is a collaboration between artist Amy Finlayson and photographer Georges Antoni (The Artist Group), with their works framed by sculptor Dion Horstmans. Amy and Georges have previously collaborated on projects involving fashion photography.
However, Gravity is Only a Theory says the Butterfly welcomes a new iteration of their creative relationship that has birthed a body of work blending photography with art. This has culminated in 22 unique, single edition pieces that acutely focuses on organic, modern notions of sensuality. The art pieces centre on the innate and raw beauty of Chic model Charlotte Morton. Her body is the canvas that generates beautifully provoking forms that are enhanced by Amy’s painting, both before and after Georges has taken the photograph.
Each of these pieces have been printed by one of Australia’s premier printers (Selena Simpson of SunStudios) and will float in handcrafted steel frames by Dion Horstmans. The opening evening will embrace all senses with chef Sian Redgrave collaborating with Simon Jonson, local Sydney food growers and a clay sculptor to develop a feast like centrepiece to the room. The sensory journey is further enhanced by the scents of an Atelier Lumira candle installation, with every guest receiving an exclusive custom made candle, hand-painted by Amy.
“Georges and I approached this project without an exact brief but with an open mind. We wanted to keep things incredibly raw, real and to lift the veil of perfection that fashion sometimes hides behind. Leaving us with a series of works that are as challenging as they are beautiful. As they say…’Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.’
Amy went on to say, ”We want people to experience beauty in a multitude of ways. Georges captured Charlotte in varied states of emotion and physicality. My role was to enhance the feeling through stains of ink and berries, arranged florals and paints, messes of chalk, fruit, pollen and gold inks. We hope the result takes the viewer on an emotional, deep, sensual and creative journey.”
